When can you see results on the tattoo after a laser treatment?
It can feel like a long process to remove a tattoo with laser, and many wonder what the process actually looks like. When do you start to see results?
What happens during a laser treatment?
The laser light shatters the ink in the skin using pressure waves, breaking down the ink into tiny particles. Then, the body’s immune system begins gradually transporting these particles away. This process occurs over a long period and proceeds slowly.
After the first laser treatment, you might sometimes see an immediate change. This is mostly the case for tattoos with a lot of shading and where the ink isn't set too deep. These can appear lighter right away, but the real effect of the treatment won't be visible until a few months later.
A tattoo with a lot of ink or one that is very dark initially typically won’t show an immediate difference. It is, however, normal for the skin in the area to be red and swollen for a few days after treatment. For tattoos that are very dark, new, or contain color, it is common not to see any difference until after the second or third treatment.
Results Week by Week
Weeks 1-2
During the first two weeks after treatment, you may sometimes see that the tattoo appears a bit lighter. The skin may feel sensitive and may require extra care with a moisturizing cream.
Weeks 3-6
During this period, the body starts breaking down the ink particles, and sometimes you may notice that the tattoo has become even lighter since treatment.
After 6-8 Weeks
This is when the real difference begins to show. Many people notice that the tattoo is significantly lighter and may look more "faded."
Weeks 8-12
The tattoo continues to lighten week by week, and after 12 weeks, it is time for your next treatment. Waiting even longer can sometimes reveal even more of an effect on the tattoo.
Sometimes, it can take longer to see results, which can be due to factors such as smoking, a newer tattoo, or strong colors in the ink.
How Many Treatments?
Most tattoos require 6-10 treatments to disappear completely. However, if the tattoo contains a lot of ink and is set deeply, it may take 10-12 treatments or more. Removing a tattoo with laser requires patience, but by following the recommendations from your practitioner, you will soon be able to enjoy clear skin, free from tattoos!
