During Laser Treatment

How long does a laser treatment take?

Welcome to your treatment! A session with a laser specialist at Rethink typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes, but the actual laser treatment itself rarely lasts more than a few minutes.

What happens during a treatment?

1. How has it gone since your last visit?

The session starts with removing any numbing cream that you may have applied before your visit. You can purchase the numbing cream from a pharmacy, following the provided instructions.

We will then take photos of your tattoo to track progress and compare results from previous treatments.

Together, we evaluate how far you’ve come in the tattoo removal process, such as how much has faded compared to how many times you’ve been treated. This helps us determine if we should increase or decrease the laser intensity or extend the time between treatments. Some areas of the body may require more time to remove the tattoo.

If this is your first visit, the laser specialist will explain the process, what you can expect, and answer all your questions.

2. The ink breaks down

During your first treatment, we perform a test shot with the laser to see how the ink in your tattoo and your skin react.
If this isn’t your first treatment, the specialist will adjust the laser intensity and treat the entire tattoo or parts of it. We’ll also evaluate how your skin and tattoo respond. The progress and the intensity used will be noted for your next session.

Throughout the treatment, we will cool the area to reduce pain and prevent the skin from overheating. The laser shatters the ink particles, generating heat, which may cause redness and warmth. The cooling machine helps prevent overheating and protects the skin from damage.

3. Aftercare cream

Once the tattoo has been treated, we apply a cream that soothes and moisturizes the skin to ensure optimal healing.

Since cooling is an essential part of the treatment, and redness can persist for a while, we provide you with a cooling pack to continue cooling the area when you get home. You will also receive instructions on how and when to use the cooling pack.

4. Aftercare instructions

As mentioned earlier, you’ll receive a cooling pack. We also provide aftercare instructions that we recommend following to minimize the risk of blisters. By following these guidelines, the healing process will go smoothly, and your skin will eventually forget it ever had a tattoo.

5. Schedule a new appointment

Based on how things have progressed and how your tattoo has reacted to the laser, we’ll recommend a new treatment time. You can schedule the next session during your visit, and you will receive a confirmation via email. Since there is a minimum of 12 weeks between treatments, we’ll also send you a reminder via SMS.
