How long does it take to remove a tattoo? How long does a treatment take?
A treatment at Rethink takes only a few minutes of active laser time on average. We recommend waiting at least 12 weeks between treatments to allow your immune system and skin to recover properly.
How many treatments are required?
A tattoo can be removed in as few as 2 treatments, but it may take up to 12 sessions. It all depends on the type of tattoo you have and when it was done.
On average, it takes 6-10 treatments to remove a tattoo. For tattooed eyebrows, 3-6 treatments are usually enough. If you're preparing for a cover-up, it often only takes 3-5 treatments.
Three factors that affect how many treatments your tattoo will need:
1. Color (or colors) of the tattoo
- Black is the color that is easiest to remove with tattoo removal.
- Red usually fades relatively easily, but how effectively it disappears depends on the shade.
- Yellow and orange colors are more challenging to remove. They typically require more treatments because laser beams have a harder time breaking down the pigment particles.
- Green and blue shades are among the most difficult to remove completely. If the tattoo has larger areas in these colors, we often recommend a cover-up after a few treatments.
- White ink is particularly difficult to fade completely, and there is a risk that it may leave a permanent gray tint after laser treatment. If your tattoo contains white ink, it is important that you inform us about it during the consultation.
2. Text and designs
Texts, designs, and other images are relatively easy to laser away.
Removing a cover-up (an old tattoo covered by a new one) takes longer because there may be double the amount of ink in certain areas. This also applies to tattoos that have been touched up over time.
3. Age of the tattoo
The age of the tattoo is a critical factor in the laser removal process.
Older tattoos tend to fade in color, making it easier to fully remove the ink. For this reason, they often require fewer treatments.
A newer tattoo can be removed, but it will likely take longer since there’s more ink compared to an older one.
Laser removal is an advanced method to get rid of tattoos, but it doesn’t show immediate results. Many factors influence the tattoo removal process, and there are no shortcuts without unhealthy consequences.

“I snitt tar det 8-12 behandlingar att ta bort en tatuering. För tatuerade ögonbryn brukar vanligtvis 3-6 behandlingar räcka. Inför en cover-up så behöves det oftast bara 3-5 behandlingar.”
