Removal of Cosmetic Tattoos

In recent years, cosmetic tattoos have become very popular for achieving more defined eyes and lips without having to use makeup. If you are no longer satisfied with your cosmetic tattoo, laser is an effective way to get rid of it. However, it is only eyebrows we can remove with laser, if you want to remove lip liner or eyeliner you need to turn to a clinic that offers that type of treatment.

The most common technique for eyebrows is called microblading and is a semi-permanent method where thin lines are tattooed to resemble strands, to fill in where hair is missing. Usually this type of tattoo should fade naturally after 1 - 3 years, but it is rare for them to disappear completely. Most often it is because the pigment has been worked too deep into the skin. In some cases, a more permanent method has been used and then brows have been tattooed with traditional tattoo machines. This type of tattoo usually sits deeper in the skin and can therefore require more treatments.

Below we describe how the process works

Consultation:

If you are thinking about removing a cosmetic tattoo, a consultation with us is the first step. It is best to book it on site so that we can also do a test on a small part of the tattoo to see how the pigment and skin react. In most cases, a color shift of the tattoo occurs when treated with laser, as cold or warm pigments have often been mixed into a cosmetic tattoo. This can show up as a yellow, red or orange hue where it was previously gray/black. Some tattoos also lose their dark pigment and turn red over time, which can be a reason to want to remove it. We can also remove such pigments with our laser.

During the consultation, we go through the expected results and you also get an estimate of the number of treatments. Usually 3 - 6 treatments are needed. It is important to remember that the process looks different for everyone and we base it on your specific tattoo, skin type and other factors. You also get advice before the treatment where the most important thing is to avoid sun, tanning bed and self-tanner a few weeks before treatment, and inform about numbing cream.

When you do a treatment with us, you do not need to shave off your eyebrows before treatment. Your hair will not be permanently affected, but in some cases it can temporarily lose pigment. You can color your brows a few days after treatment if this should occur.

Treatment:

We start by washing the area from any makeup and numbing cream. Then we take pictures to have and compare with during the process. The treatment can be felt a little, but it goes very fast. It takes about 2 - 4 minutes to treat both eyebrows.

During and after the treatment, we cool the skin with cold air, which is usually very comfortable. After the treatment, you get an ice pack to cool with during the day and care advice.

Things to keep in mind afterwards are not to sunbathe, apply makeup to the brows for 1 - 2 days, wait with exercise for two days and bathing and sauna for a week. It is normal to be a little red and feel swollen and sore. Usually it has subsided within a few hours or the day after.

Each treatment is done at 8-week intervals. This is to allow the body time to work off the ink and for the skin to have time to recover. We book your next appointment after each treatment.

Results:

Just like with everything else, the final result differs from person to person. There are a number of different factors that affect what your result will be, such as age of the tattoo, technique used, if you have done more than one cosmetic tattoo, color, depth, skin type. It is important to have realistic expectations and patience when starting a process to remove a tattoo.
